Submissions

Red Dirt Review is accepting submissions in short story, memoir and poetry. Please send all submissions as attachments  (MS Word preferred, but RTF, Open Office and Pages files are all acceptable) to an email. Send emails to reddirtreview AT gmail DOT com. I think you know what to do with the spam-fighter bits. Stories do not have to be fictional. I grew up in Bullock Creek, SC, so I know sometimes things happen that you just CANNOT make up.

Here’s the deal -

1) There needs to be some element of the American South in the story. Even it’s nothing more than a Clemson Tigers baseball cap or a jar of moonshine, it’s gotta have something Southern in it. If you can’t handle that, then don’t submit.

2) We want original stuff, but we’ll take reprints, too. I’m not picky, I just want to promote the best in Southern literature. I’m lying – I’m picky as hell, but I’m not going to turn down good writing just because it ended up on your blog once upon a time.

3) Rights – they’re yours. This is your stuff, we acquire the following rights upon acceptance – we have the right to post your stuff on the website. We have the right to collect it into print and ebook editions. We acquire non-exclusive perpetual rights for print and electronic editions. We have the right to sell those print/ebook editions and use the money for web hosting, nightcrawlers or corn likker or whatever else I damwell feel like. You have the right to sell the piece somewhere else, anywhere else in fact, as long as they don’t require exclusivity. Your payment is notoriety and being famous on the interwebs, plus a(nother) publication credit. If we get real lucky in the future, we’ll be able to offer an honorarium. I ain’t holding my breath.

4) No erotica. Sorry.

5) All other genres are okay, and it’s okay to cuss. If there’s a romance story with a little heat, that’s alright, too. But no straight-up erotica or porn. And I know there’s a difference. Erotica uses a feather. Porn uses the whole chicken. Otherwise, we’re wide-ass open. Lit fic, chick fic, horror, fantasy, sci-fi, memoir, poetry, whatever the hell. Write it, slap a y’all in there somewhere and send it on to reddirtreview AT gmail DOT com.

6) Length – keep it reasonable. I ain’t postin’ your novel. Under 10,000 words. The shorter the better. Think about what you want to read on a website, after all.

  1. I’m glad to know about the Red Dirt Review. I’m a fiction writer, have published stories in literary journals and will probably submit something to Red Dirt soon– sounds like a good opportunity for Southern writers.
